Unoptimized prescription (Rx) medication use was responsible for 275, 689 annual deaths in 2016. (Watanabe 2018). This stunning statistic doesn't count non Rx products and accidental substance use disorder overdoses.
If unoptimized prescription use was counted by the CDC as a cause of death it would rank as the 3rd leading cause of death in the US (pre COVID-19) (CDC 2017)
